When is Shark Week? The 2023 Shark Week Dates

It’s that time of the year again when we wait patiently for the Shark Week 2023 dates!

Every year we wait with anticipation for Discovery Channel to give us details on the new Shark Week celebrity appearances, Shark Week dates, and Shark Week schedule. 

Shark Week 2023

Since 1988 the weeklong shark content airs either in July or August. It is speculated that Shark Week 2023 dates will be July 10-16, but we don’t know the exact dates yet. Every year, Discovery makes us anxiously wait and wonder when the new week-long content will air. As July approaches, they release more content and give us hints about who will host the series and what celebrities we can expect.

Last year  Shark Week celebrities included Tracy Morgan, Noah Schnapp, and cast members of Jackass. The show’s first SharkWeek MASTER OF CEREMONIES was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The Rock did a fantastic job opening and closing the show. Who will be this year’s MASTER OF CEREMONIES? We have to wait patiently and see.

Shark Week Start Dates Since 1988

Here is a list of Shark Week start dates since its inception in 1988, along with a brief summary of each year’s programming:

  1. July 17, 1988 – The first-ever Shark Week featured a variety of shark documentaries and programming, including “Caged in Fear,” which explored the risks of diving with sharks.
  2. July 2, 1989 – The second year of Shark Week continued to showcase documentaries and programming about sharks, including “Sharks: Predators or Prey?” which explored the role of sharks in the ecosystem.
  3. July 1, 1990 – Shark Week 1990 featured programming about the biology and behavior of sharks, including “Great White Shark: The Ultimate Predator.”
  4. July 7, 1991 – The fourth year of Shark Week included documentaries about the history of sharks, as well as more adventurous programming, like “Sharkman: The Greatest Shark Dive Ever.”
  5. July 12, 1992 – Shark Week 1992 focused on the behavior and habits of different species of sharks, including “Sharks: The Magnificent and Misunderstood.”

  7. July 10, 1994 – Shark Week 1994 featured a variety of programming about different shark species, including “The Shark Takes a Siesta,” which explored the resting behavior of sharks.
  8. August 6, 1995 – The eighth year of Shark Week continued to explore the world of sharks, including programming about the anatomy and physiology of these fascinating creatures.
  9. August 4, 1996 – Shark Week 1996 featured a mix of documentaries and adventure programming, including “Shark Attack Survivors: The Trials and the Triumphs.”
  10. August 10, 1997 – This year’s Shark Week programming included documentaries about shark myths and legends, as well as more adventurous programming like “Sharks in a Desert Sea.”
  11. August 9, 1998 – The eleventh year of Shark Week focused on the behavior and feeding habits of different species of sharks, including the hammerhead and the tiger shark.
  12. August 8, 1999 – Shark Week 1999 explored the relationship between sharks and humans, including programming about shark attacks and shark conservation.
